The "Friends and Foundation of the Northfield Public Library" (FFNPL) is a non-profit, community-based organization since 1983 that supports the Northfield Public Library. In cooperation with the Northfield Public Library, FFNPL supports early literacy programs, recruits volunteers, provides support for equipment in the Library such as computers and eBook readers, and organizes special events including fundraising trivia bees, concerts, speakers and book readings.

Trivia Bee this Friday 11/1 7pm-9:30pm

bee2019

Join us at the Grand Event Center from 7-9pm, as the Friends of the Northfield Public Library hosts the 8th Annual Team Trivia Bee. As veteran Beecompetitors, the structure will be familiar: Jessica Peterson White will be our quizmistress extraordinaire as teams of up to four persons compete for trivia glory and nice prizes, all the while supporting our public library. But we are always trying to improve the competition so there may be some new elements. Once again, the entry fee for a team is $100, all of which goes to support library programming. Register today, or at the library.

In addition to the team competition, there will again be an audience participation trivia game called Heads or Tails, with the winner receiving some very nice prizes (and trivia glory, of course). And all are welcome to come, watch and play along with neighbors.

We hope that you can attend!

City Council Proclaims "Friends of Libraries Week

The Northfield Public Library will be spending the week of October 20-26, 2019, celebrating the Friends of the Library group as part of the 13th annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week.

The Friends and Foundation of the Northfield Public Library were established in 1981 and have raised over $1,500,000 for the library to date. Currently over 400 community members contribute annually to the Friends, and many of these contributors actively volunteer their time to assist the group with fundraising efforts that include an annual trivia bee, a Crazy Daze book sale and a (new this year) Puzzle Playoff.

“The library has always played such an important role in my life and in my family’s life,” said Friends Co-Chair, Debbie Navarro. “I truly enjoy being able to give something back – and being an active member of this group is fun!”

Other board members of this group are Lynne Young, Co-Chair; Bill North, Treasurer; Mary Steen, Secretary; Susan Dean, Mary Lewis Grow, Christian Hakala, Katie Lewis, Sarai Moreno, and Lois Stratmoen. The staff liaison for the group is Laurie Kodet.

"Our library would be much poorer without the Friends,” said library director Teresa Jensen. “Our Friends contributed substantially to our recent building project and to the purchase of the new bookmobile. Their funding supplements our programming budget and makes it possible to try new things like our Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.”

National Friends of Libraries Week is coordinated by United for Libraries, a division of the American Library Association with approximately 4,000 personal and group members representing hundreds of thousands of library supporters. United for Libraries supports those who govern, promote, advocate, and fundraise for libraries, and brings together library trustees, advocates, friends, and foundations into a partnership that creates a powerful force for libraries in the 21st century. Friends and Foundation Annual Meeting Scheduled for September 22

The Library's atrium will be the setting for the annual meeting of the Friends and Foundation of the Northfield Public Library on Sunday, September 22, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.

Please join us for the business meeting when we will acknowledge the contributions of one "Stand Out Friend" and summarize what the Friends have been doing recently and what is planned for the upcoming year. Meet other friends and enjoy an engaging talk about books from Jessica Peterson White, owner of Content Books in Northfield. Refreshments will be served.

Friends Bookmark Contest Winners

The Friends of the Library's 2019 bookmark took a slightly different turn.  This summer, children and youth in grades K-12 were invited to submit their artwork for entry in a contest.  Four bookmarks were chosen to be made into bookmarks for distribution at various events.  All 18 of the entries are on display at the library from August 6-23.  After the display is taken down, contest entrants may pick up their original artwork and a prize at the front desk of the library.

Pictured here are the winning entries as well as the back of each bookmark.  Thanks to the winners and to all the children who entered.  We hope to repeat this event next year and would like to see you enter again.

Crazy Daze Book Sale Supports Library Programming
Poised on the corner of Division and Third Street with the NPL Bookbike chock full of great used books for sale, the Friends were proud to participate in this year's Crazy Daze Celebration on July 25. We had a wonderful time talking with Northfielders as they made their way down Division, scouting the great bargains. The Friends' own contribution to the craziness was a great book bag deal: buy a Friends' bookbag for 10 dollars and you were allowed to fill it with books and Friends' t-shirts! Thanks to all those who stopped by and bought a bag and/or used books. We garnered $187.69 in sales and donations--all of which will go to support the Library's programming!

Book bags for sale
at the library.
Besides being perfect for carrying library books and other media, they are great for shopping, travel and, in a pinch, laundry. AND, they tell the world about our beautiful library! If you forget this bag when you go to the library, look for the Boomerang Bags, reusable, returnable cloth book bags.
